ProGen Meetups
As passionate genealogists, we understand the importance of continuous learning, networking, and
camaraderie within our field. A ands professional genealogists who have completed or are in the process of
completing a ProGen Study Group, we have a unique opportunity to organize ourselves into local and
regional genealogical meetups that are focused on furthering our careers, geeking out on genealogy, and just
socializing as well.
Getting together in localized meetups in your communities with other interested colleagues can help you
continue your professional development, share knowledge, and foster meaningful face-to-face connections.
These meetups aim to offer a supportive environment in which to discuss research strategies, exchange
resources, and collaborate on projects.
Meetups are not run by ProGen…they are created and managed by you – the ProGen students and alumni.
Some ideas for what you can do when you meetup include:
- Roundtable Discussion Groups: Facilitate roundtable discussions on topics of interest, such as
certification/accreditation, writing and publishing, international research challenges, etc. - Arrange tours of your local archives and research libraries to learn about local primary record
collections. - Workshops and Skill-Building Sessions: Organize workshops focused on honing specific
genealogical skills or learning new research techniques and tools. - Peer Review/Case Study Groups: Receive feedback for challenging/complex research projects for
collaborative brainstorming sessions. - Genealogists Happy Hour/Networking Hour: a casual socializing event to mingle, socialize, and
exchange tips in a relaxed atmosphere. - Professional Development Seminars: Chat about topics such as marketing/branding, client
relations, project management, time management, or legal/ethical considerations in genealogical
practice. - Coffee and Book Exchange: Trade books/resources that are no longer needed to swap with
others.
Each geographic meetup will be responsible for organizing themselves and choosing activities. You could
meet as often as you want! Like all things ProGen, this is purely a volunteer effort that requires participation
to make the most of it!
