Anna Schnell: Swedish-North American genealogy

ProGen Member Overview

Anna specializes in Swedish-North American genealogy. Born and raised in Sweden, she began her journey into genealogy by researching her own family. Like many Swedes, her family tree includes relatives who emigrated to America.

Her experiences living in California, Indiana, and New York, as well as visiting her American relatives, inspired her to become a professional genealogist with a focus on Swedish-North Americans. Anna enjoys helping others explore their family histories through DNA and family history research and coaching. She is a member of the Swedish genealogical societies Genealogiska Föreningen and DiS-Öst, as well as the US-based Association of Professional Genealogists.

Education

Anna studied Swedish archives, history, genealogy, paleography (old handwriting), and Swedish-American history at the universities of Göteborg (Gothenburg), Linköping, Stockholm, and Uppsala. She also holds an MBA in International Economy from Uppsala University.

In addition, she completed various genealogy-related courses on topics such as DNA research, genealogy in Canada and the U.S., using historical Swedish maps, and exploring the records of National Archives in the respective countries. These courses were provided by genealogical societies, museums, libraries, and the National Archives.

Anna further honed her expertise through the 14-month ProGen 63 Study Group, where she gained valuable experience working with American historical records. She has also analyzed around 40 Swedish-American photo albums from the mid-1800s to early 1900s and undertaken numerous assignments for Swedish-American clients.
